Sciatica and Chinese medicine: read your pattern, calm the nerve
July 20, 2026
That pain running from your low back or backside down the leg has a path, and in Chinese medicine it isn't random. It travels the Bladder and Gallbladder channels, down the back and the side of the leg, which is exactly where I needle it.
I'm Doctor Stacee, a doctor of Oriental medicine and licensed acupuncturist in Las Vegas. Here's what a stretch video and a bottle of ibuprofen won't tell you. Sciatica shows up differently in different bodies, and the version you have decides what actually calms it.
The three patterns I see most
Cold and damp. Your pain is worse in cold, wet, rainy weather and eases with heat. It feels deep, heavy, and achy. This is the back that stiffens up in winter and loosens in a hot shower.
Blood stasis. Sharp, stabbing, fixed in one spot. It often shows up after an injury or a long stretch of sitting, and it tends to be worse at night. The pain has a pinpoint quality, like it lives in one exact place.
Deficiency. Dull, nagging, and paired with fatigue. It flares when you're run-down or after you've been standing too long, and it eases with rest. This is the back that goes out when your tank is empty.
Most people are a blend, with one pattern leading. The point is that your sciatica has a signature, and your care should match it instead of treating everyone the same.
What acupuncture does, and why the channel matters
When I treat sciatica, I'm working the same channels your pain is traveling. The needles release the muscles guarding the nerve, bring circulation back to a cranky area so it can settle, and calm the nervous system so the nerve stops firing on a hair trigger.
Patients usually notice it first in small moments. Getting out of the car without the jolt. Sitting through dinner. Sleeping through the night.
APIT: the needle upgrade for stubborn cases
For sciatica that's sharp, stubborn, or coming off an injury, I often add acupoint injection therapy, or APIT. Instead of only placing a needle at the point, I inject a small amount of a targeted formula, gentle biotherapeutics like Traumeel and Zeel, right into the points along the channel your pain travels. Same map, more staying power.
Most acupuncturists don't offer this. I'm licensed and endorsed for it here in Nevada, and for the right sciatica it can do more than acupuncture alone. It's a big part of why my tagline is what it is.
Support you can start at home
While you're deciding on care, you can press three of the same points I use. The hip point deep in the buttock, the point in the crease behind the knee, and the point just below the outside of the knee. Firm, steady pressure on the sore side, about a minute each, never pushing into more numbness or shooting.
I put the full at-home guide, with the channel map and the point locations, into a one-page download. Get The Sciatica Calm-Down.
Herbs matched to your pattern
This is where Chinese medicine gets specific. The right herbal support depends on which pattern is leading, and there are three ways to get it, from grab-and-go to fully personalized. See your herbal options, matched to your pattern.
When home care isn't enough
If the pain keeps circling back, an evaluation is where it starts. We'll read your pattern, find where the nerve is getting pinched, and build a plan around your back, not an insurance company's rules. I'm cash-based, straight pricing, no prior auth, no visit caps.

A quick safety note, because it matters. If you have loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness in the saddle or groin area, or fast-worsening weakness in a leg, skip the home care and get urgent medical attention.
